Tower Hamlets election – the bookies’ odds

October 16, 2010 by trialbyjeory

They say that bookmakers rarely get it wrong, but I’d love to know the person setting the odds for unpredictable Tower Hamlets election.

Sporting Bet has opened a book here. At 11am this morning, they had Helal Abbas at 2/11 odds-on favourite, with Lutfur Rahman at 8/1, John Griffiths and Neil King at 16/1 and Alan Duffell at 100/1.

In the past hour, money must have flowed to Lutfur. As at 12.20pm, he’s come in to 3/1 and Abbas has drifted to 2/7.

My bet is that will continue to change.

Lol about IFE supporters putting bets on lutfur.

Expect abbas to pull ahead once punters factor in second preferences. But if course, the very same punters said poplar and limehouse would be a Tory win in points during the GE campaign.

    ELECTED MAYOR FOR TOWER HAMLETS

    Why support Helal Abbas?

” I am supporting Helal Abbas because he is a local person ,who grew up in Tower Hamlets and has

been active in politics, community development and housing movements. He was one of the founders of

he Bangladeshi Youth Movement, campaigning against racism back in the 70s.As a local Councillor

and Leader of the Council he has served all sections of our multi-cultural community. I also believe

that the experience he has gained over the years will help him to fight for the rights and entitlements of

the people from the East end of London.”

Why oppose the Tories and liberal Democrats?

“The draconian cuts to be introduced by the coalition government, will reduce public services and

disproportionately impact upon the poorer sections of the community in the East End of London. The

radical welfare reforms, higher student tuition fees and reduction in welfare benefits will cause

hardship to the poorer sections of the community .The Tories are no real friends of ordinary families.

They originated and exist for the richer sections of the community and people like Lord Ashcroft. The

Liberal Democrats, who are usually regarded as the political conscience of the nation have also sold

out to the Tories for a few Ministerial positions”.

    Why support Labour?

“Although Labour has moved away from it’s origins, but it is still the mainstream political party that

will defend the interests of the ordinary people of this country , together with the trade union

movements.Labour will support the people of Tower Hamlets through:

    • Investment in social housing for those who cannot afford to buy their own homes

    • Investment in inner city development, regeneration and environmental improvements

    • Investment in training and job opportunities for the unemployed and support small businesses

    • Investment in youth , social and community facilities

    • Investment in education for low income families

    • Invest in projects that will create understanding and harmony between different communities

The labour party is the only alternative to conservatives, as a party in waiting to form the next

government. Political promises cannot be delivered without power and this is why I am urging

everyone to support Labour’s Helal Abbas”

    Way forward?

    • ” RESPECT has been rejected by the people of Tower Hamlets at the last election and

therefore we cannot support a candidate fronted by George Galloway. It’s time for Galloway

    to return home!

    • We cannot support a candidate , who allegedly has links with covert Islamic extremists

through the Islamic Forum of Europe, those who also allegedly support JAMAT war criminals

in Bangladesh, who were responsible for raping of our women and genocide of Bengalis who

were fighting for our cultural and national emancipation from foreign army rule. Delwar

Hussain Syedi of JAMAT has been a regular preacher and fundraiser at the London Muslim

Centre. This begs the question-who gives them the right to use the public funded East London

Mosque-a place of worship- for their political base and campaigns?

    • Vote for a secular candidate, who is an east ender and therefore obliged to serve the local

community. We can make him accountable. As ethnic minorities we need to belong to

mainstream political parties to promote our interests. THIS IS WHY MY PLEA IS TO VOTE

FOR LABOUR’S HELAL ABBAS ON THURSDAY 21st of OCTOBER

I think the odds will change now after KEN LIVINGSTONE’S DRAMATIC INTERVENTION.
