Respect anger at Lutfur’s “betrayal”

November 23, 2010 by trialbyjeory

Anyone who followed this blog in the weeks leading up to last month’s mayoral election would have come across Bodrul Islam. He was the groom at the wedding Jim Fitzpatrick waked out of.

After that incident, he then joined Respect and dabbled his interesting and rather loud debating style in the choppy waters of Tower Hamlets politics. He tried to become a councillor last May, but failed. He then became one of Lutfur Rahman’s most active cheerleaders.

Facebook was his preferred medium and in September, you’ll recall this post here, when I revealed his announcement to the world that:

Part of me wants to laugh at the dismantling of the labour party but the serious part of me sees the grotesque injustice against lutfur. I personally think he should do what ken livingstone did, stand as an independent. With his popularity he will win, as the block bengali vote will be activated like never before.

Well, only a month after Lutfur was elected, Bodrul is still enlightening us through his Facebook rants. It seems that he is upset that Lutfur’s camp have been offering positions to the Tories and Lib Dems, and at the same time denying they received any help from the IFE in his election win.

On Saturday, he posted the following comments on his Facebook site.

Bodrul Islam It’s about time I revealed some honest truth about the mayor’s camp. As someone who was heavily involved with the campaign and who is now being shunned by those who use to call me everyday, I intend to show how self-interested these politicians are. No one, not even lutfur’s camp in innocent in tower hamlets politics.

On Monday, he posted the following:
Bodrul Islam I don’t understand why the mayor’s team deny they have a strong relationship with the ife. Ife are a moderate organisation, so why this lie? I mean the mayor’s main advisor was an ife activist and his campaign headquarters were staffed by ife members/ activists.
An hour later, he wrote:
Bodrul Islam They really need a proper PR person. I hope they don’t try and recruit alistair campbell, then again you never know whth these guys, they wanted to co-opt cllr gould who was a participant in the infamous dispatches programme. I mean if they are that desperate to get into the labour’s camp they may as well offer the amoral abbas a cabinet position. Or even jeory and gilligan.
And then a few hours later he had an angry exchange with Sultana Begum, who remains pro-Lutfur. Here’s what he warned her:
Bodrul Islam Oh readers sultana still pretending that she doesn’t know about this ife/mayor’s camp connection. People I will send you an inbox message sultana sent me during the election warning us that it would be politically damaging for the mayor if he admits he collaborates with respect and ife. I will upload it tomorrow. Hopefully her deceptive ploy will be discovered by all.
My old mate, Carole Swords, Respect’s chair and a past master at winding people up (she once chucked glass of water over Marc Francis in the council chamber and then, perfectly within her rights, refused a police request to leave the premises), has been trying to calm him down.
But I do hope Bodrul continues: we’d love to see this email….
UPDATE – 5.30pm
Andrew Gilligan has just posted similar observations on his blog at The Telegraph. He has extracted further comments from Bodrul’s Facebook page:

“Let’s not beat around the bush there has always been a strategic relationship between Respect, the IFE and the mayor’s camp. That presents to me no problems as all three groups are moderate organisations [sic] who have similar policy considerations. The mayor’s campaign co-ordination was heavily influenced by Respect and IFE activists. It was collectively and cohesively planned by the groups…

“We got activated and campaigned day and night for the mayor. It is no exaggeration that most of the campaigners during the election were either Respect or IFE activists. I was a polling agent for lutfur rahman in bromley by bow and chief co-ordinator. I was involved in a lot of the collaborative high-level meetings where I also met IFE activists…

“OK then Sultana [another poster on Facebook], do you not remember a strategic house meeting where you and I were present, along with Lutfur and [now deputy mayor] Ohid [Ahmed], [Lutfur-supporting councillor] Rania [Khan], Rania’s mum and a senior IFE member. Or was this a figment of my imagination? I will also give even greater details of other more strategic meetings of the way the mayor’s camp was desperate for Respect’s and IFE’s support.”

Facebook rantings of pro labour supporters trying to ruin lutfur. Everyone knows bodrul has been offerd council seat if he damages lutfur. Sultana is a nobody no one knows who she is. Rantings of some respect and pro labour people. U guys are so sad to be obsessed with lutfur and tower hamlet. I suggest u get a life. Lutfur approached everyone for help in this election and asked for cross coalition support. Whoever they were. But he did not promise anything in return. Some people supported lutfur, some respect members thinking lutfur will pay them back and theyl be in limelight or famous. All this shows is few petty people arguing who are no bodies. Pro labour supporters trying to trip lutfur up like yourslef mr jeory and mr gilligan. u can do wat u like to lutfur but it won’t get them anywhere.

Rantings of a labour respect member. Is this your evidence of lutfur respect collaboration? Ted and gilligan u are very funny. Anyone can say anything on facebook. Lutfur as an independent approached everybody for help. He asked for cross coalition support regardless of who u are. he reached out to everyone and made no promises. Some people feel they have done more than others and deserve to be close to the mayor. Any crazy person can rant like that. No one knows who any of them are.

  5. on November 23, 2010 at 7:58 pm lubs

Anyone can say anything on face book. All abbas supporters trying to discredit lutfur. Obvious to all. Lutfur worked with everybody he never denied that. He asked for everyones support labour, respect, tory, green, non voters. Ife, priests everyone. As independent he could not have one without that support. So what’s the big deal? Seriously ted and gilligan are no different to bodrul. Trying to discredit a elected mayor for own political gain.

  6. on November 23, 2010 at 11:02 pm Concerned

Sultana is close to Rania Khan, was a Left List candidate for London assembly list along with Rania and Oli who are both now in Lutfur’s cabinet. Left List was the SWP off shoot from Respect. When Left List failed they all briefly joined the Labour Party before leaving again for Lutfur. Sultana was v involved in promoting the lies about Abbas being a wife beater before the mayoral election.

    Oh look

Someone isn’t happy with Bodrul? He’s called Alam Sheikh and there’s a nice shot of him shaking hands with Lutfur Rahman

Lutfur is also supported by Labour peers and New Statesman editor Mehdi Hasan, and many white Labour party activists across the nation! Likewise David Cameron is supported by Palestinian civilian death causing Zionist Israelis. Does that mean Cameron is also ‘bad’ like Lutfur just because his supporters are racially motivated? (Even though DC is of Jewish descent himself.)

  13. on November 24, 2010 at 6:52 pm Bodrul Islam

I feel I must respond to some of the hysterical comments which are making me cringe. The assertions of some of the mayor’s supporters illustrates the paranoia affecting this camp. I categorically stand by my comments that the mayor’s camp had a strategic relationship with respect. Unlike some bizarre interpretaion by the mayor’s camp I have the email correspondences to verify this fact. Lest we forget I was a polling agent for the mayor and a key co-ordinator in Bromley-by-bow. I still have the polling letter from the council. My qualms lie with the mayor’s team who initiated the strategic partnership asserting the compatibility of policies between the two respective camps. There was also a promise of a grand coalition to tackle the cuts. The mayor’s team sudden amnesia is breathtaking as we at respect were their key campaigners. Nothing political about my musings but a criticism of the grotesque machiavellian strategy they deployed against respect for political expediency. Nothing personal but an observation that the mayor’s camp is as self-interested as abbas’s camp. This is not the dawn of a new politics that the mayor’s camp promised to the community. The farcical commentaries become more hysterical when the mayor’s camp allege that I am helping labour, jeory and gilligan. If they ever read my comments they will realise that I am a loud opponent of labour, gilligan and jeory. However that does not mean that I should not speak my mind when the mayor’s camp engages in such unprincipled strategies. Freedom of expression is something we should all value in politics even if we profoundly disagree with comments. I have always defended the mayor against the right-wing slurs accusing him of liaising with extremist organisations. The ife are a moderate organisation period. All the empirical evidence testifies to this reality. I am willing to challenge anyone who disagrees. For me this situation displays the immaturity of the mayor’s camp who are concocting baseless lies against me because I dare to criticise them.

Nice one Bodrul. You are a man of integrity and courage. You impress us with your views. The Telegraph should have you replacing its incumbent London Editor to take on the mayor, for that will carry more weight than Mr Gilligan whose image has been ruined by his recent employment with an Iranian anti-semitic satellite tv channel PressTv, all for a few ‘shillings’. Welcome to Trial by Fury!

Is the left list candidate reported here a different Sultana Begum?

  17. on November 24, 2010 at 10:23 pm Lutfur is supporter by anti semites

    Hello

No – of course it is not anti-Semitic to oppose Zionism.

Correct me if I am wrong however but Ted Joery has never made any public statement on the state of Israel – Ted is pretty much a local journo – he doesn’t have a foreign policy

However – the mentally unstable Wais Islam stated that he was called Ted “Jewry”. Wais is likely to be expelled from the Labour Party over this.

So someone obviously though Ted was Jewish, equated that with Zionism, and clearly doesn’t like either.

It’s VERY concerned that Shahanara Begum, a ‘journalist’ would ‘like’ such an alarming post.

    • on November 25, 2010 at 10:49 am anon1

“Ted is pretty much a local journo”

Now now, come on. We all know Ted is so much more than that. 😉

  18. on November 24, 2010 at 11:52 pm shahanara

Chill people, it was an inadvertant error clicking ‘like’ on that comment, I had clicked like on the link without reading the full post. I am completely opposed to categorising people by their ethnicity, religion, gender, etc; indeed I spend much time trying to fight it. I clicked like on four similar links, this was unfortunately one of them. My reasoning for clicking on those links is subsequently made clear in the comment I made on the thread, it is about my admiration of journalist, even though views can differ strongly, I feel journalists do the essential task of keeping politicians from getting complacent. Anyone who knows me will know I hate politicians and am no ‘key supporter’ of any politician. I support the politician who I feel will best promote equal representation.

  19. on November 25, 2010 at 12:37 am Fighting4EdMiliband

One can only conclude that all the Labour councillors who were imposed by the London Labour party (Chris Weavers and Cllr Rachel Soundars) including those extremist Lutfurites who later got expelled appear to be politically, psychologically and mentally unstable due to divisive leftwing and rightwing elements within THLP caused by the hunger for power. Perhaps we should have a fresh set of councillors next time as we need stability overall!

  20. on November 25, 2010 at 2:15 am Very concerened

The reason Tedo Jeory is reffered to as a Zionist is becuase of his anti muslim stance, and attack on Lutfur and muslim organisations. All zionists are against muslims, and share their hatred of muslims, and hes collaboration with Gilligan another Zionist is obvious to all.

  21. on November 25, 2010 at 12:23 pm Owl

    Shahanara:

Thanks for clearing that up, you are no anti-semite it is clear 🙂

Rania and Lutfur are politicians. Do you hate them?

  23. on November 25, 2010 at 4:43 pm Jones Bond

Read Alan Harts ‘Zionism, real enemies of the Jews’. Zionists are poltical extremists, whom believe in control of resources in and out of Israel. Not all Zionists are Jewish, there are Christian and athiest Zionists too. They share a hatred of Muslims and work against intelligent Muslims progressing and making a difference.

Zionists control huge resources in the world, and dominate US politics and resources. They are not enemies of Jews but enemies of the world too.

I dont know if Ted is a zionist, but Gilligan is and Ted and Gilligan are close. There are imposed right wing Zionists in Tower Hamlets politics too. Tory and Labour. They have been liasing with Gilligan. They brought him into Tower Hamlet.

Gilligan claims Muslims are progressing in politics in TH, when in management they make up less than 5% although nearly 40% of borough is Muslim.

Ed Milliband is Jewish, David cameron of Jewish decent, Oona King ran for Mayor of London is Jewish, TH Tory party Leader is Jewish, large numbers of Jewish people are in upper mangement level, business, Journalism, Often hold senior positions and in important and promiment places alongside their British counterparts. It will be Evil and wrong if anyone said Jewish people have infiltrated to turn Uk into a Zionist State. Muslims are second largest faith group in the UK, and trail behind other ethnic groups and religious groups in percentages in terms of how many senior people in politics or business or in any important, influential or prominent places in the UK.

Muslims are far too behind, equality can be achieved when they are given same respect as other groups and allowed an equal place in every corridor and section of society without being accused of being islamicists so they can engage effectively and successfully, and be role models to other people in their own community. This is why Jewish communtiy has been successful with integration, same needs to happen with Muslims in their own style. If put up barriers you alienate that community. Muslims are third generation British. Ted and others should be championing the success rather than resent the success.

  24. on November 25, 2010 at 8:52 pm shahanara

@Nico: Rania is my good friend and I enjoy her company when she is ‘off’ politician mode. I like Rania the person but not Rania the politician, if that makes sense. I know being a politician makes her happy therefore will support her like all good friends do even if I don’t find the idea too palatable. I respect Lutfur because he has managed to engage the youth and Bangladeshi women which is very difficult indeed. We are all human with our faults and politicians more than most, but if these two politicians have succeeded in engaging more women and that ticks my box. Politicians are like life partners, you could wait for the unlikely Mr or Miss Perfect or you could go with the one who has one or two qualities you have high up on your list. We have a limited time in this world to do our bit for humanity and I don’t think it makes sense to wait around. That’s one of the reasons I enjoy journalism, that way I can influence many more people with much less effort. Also I get to meet different people which is an excellent way to broaden your mind, knowledge and understanding. Stop fighting ya’ll, we were all born of one set of parents.

  25. on November 25, 2010 at 9:11 pm streetscholar

Jones Bond, hold your horses, you can’t give people jobs because they tick a box. People should be employed based on their ability to do a job. Look at Lutfor Ali, he disgraced himself whilst in a position of seniority within the council and he only got there because he was shoe horned in because he ticked a few boxes.
Ask yourself why there isn’t Bengalis or Muslims represented within the management make up of Tower Hamlets Council, probably because there isn’t the calibre of candidates within the current crop.

  26. on November 25, 2010 at 11:07 pm Sultana Begum

Dude I never joined the Left List nor put my name forward for anyting!

  27. on November 26, 2010 at 2:54 pm Jones Bond

Streetscholar..That is precisely what they would like you to believe. Friends from Kent and other places get recruited even if not of high calibre. Even schools are notorious for this. Massive numbers of qualified Muslims and other ethnics get held back. Many dont bother with Tower Hamlet anymore sickened by the politcs and institutional racism.

  28. on November 26, 2010 at 9:27 pm Fighting4EdMiliband

From covering the likes of Blair to an unknown insignificant Bodrul now by Gilligan – how the mighty fall!

  29. on November 27, 2010 at 8:36 am streetscholar

Jones Bond, there are many competent people who could do a much better job than the current crop of politicians but are put off in the knowledge that they would be pressured to fall into line with the elder established bhaisaabs. My experience of the bengali muslim employees at tower hamlets council is many do not have the organisational cultural nuances and the ability to network and build professional relationships outside their own bengali/muslim comfort zone. Yes, there are cases of injustice but more often than not, it is failing to play the corporate game of bootlicking and selling yourself to the right person that gets you your next promotion, if you are matched abilitywise. Those are the rules of the game, play by them get to the top and change them if u have to. Favouritism, nepotism and getting ‘jobs for the boys’ is rife within all organisations including Tower Hamlets, and when the bengalis/muslims do have the opportunity they will also do the same. I do agree, however, that when Muslims are successful and enter into public life it is called ‘entryism’ whereas when they fail to engage it is called a ‘failure to integrate’.

  31. on November 28, 2010 at 12:12 am Ash

Cllr Asad plainly said he will continue work with the Mayor at the best interest of local society, what she (Labour Whip – according to Fighting4EdMiliband ) could do to him? Cllr Kabir and Shahed wrote in same tone? Why Labour is now looking for an excuse. Cllr Shiria was even sharp in her approach, slapped on labour MP’s face by stating if Mayor offers a position it would be wise to consider for the best interest of the community on same day when MP’s called labour councillor at the parliament telling them not co-operate Lurfur as Mayor, did anyone watched the Channel S interview at that night? Cllr Khatun was encircled by Cllr Rajib Ahmed, Cllr Abdul Asad and Cllr Shafiqul Haque; ask them unquestionably they will not deny this. Shiria is a clever lady and understand B&B Labour MP’s time is over, it was one off, so she would definitely try once again. But she will have to work with Lutfur/Ohid/Alibor and forget Abbas if she would like community backings.

  32. on November 28, 2010 at 3:44 am Jones Bond

Streetscholar its little patronising to say Bengali Muslim employees do not have the organisational cultural nuances to operate outside their comfort zone. In my experience it was more the the many ‘white middle class’ employees working in Tower Hamlet, fresh out of kent were more likely not to be able to operate out of their comfort zone and treat Bengalis as equals.

Muslims dont drink go to pubs, and often the socialing that goes on around pubs means many muslims are overlooked for promotions, where comittment, passion and abilities dont always play priority.

Selling yourself and skills to the right person is of course important, but not at the cost of compromising on idenitity and beliefs.

I personally have spoken to senior people in schools and council whom happily have told me they avoid employing anyone that did not ‘fit in’ in other words were not white enough. A woman wearing Hijab if got recrutied will never make the senior team.

In a borough such as Tower Hamlet where workforce should reflect the diversity of the borough, and local people, and Bengali and muslims accross all levels are key for the effective delivery and improvement of services. New ideas are needed, and local passioan and zeal, and there are bright young Bengalis whom feel they are held back becuase of who they are.

  33. on November 28, 2010 at 4:02 am J

Culture within schools can be similiar. In Tower hamlet its pretty poor. Teachers and SMT always seem to have to be ‘white enough’ unless they are low ranking Admin or TAs. This created an environemnet where there was an ethnic hierarchy, Asians in the lowest jobs, whites at the top, and this gave out a disturbing image.

I use to often feel that there should be a 50-50 ethnic balance in borough like Tower Hamlet, and this somehow reflected in the SMT. As this would broaden the minds and experience of Teachers and Heads whom need to interact with professional Bengalis as intellectual equals, which will impact the way Heads/Teachers interact with children and families. It will also teach children the valuable lesson of cohesion. Its only when you are on an equal platform with others from different ethnicity does real cohesion begin.

Its pretty sterotypical and patronising dont you think? ‘bengali muslim employees do not have the organisational cultural nuances and the ability to network and build professional relationships outside their own bengali/muslim comfort zone’. I think this is what white middle class employees fresh out of Kent are more likely to be guilty of dont you think? Bengalis they are dealing with are not ‘White enough’.

Bengali Muslims dont drink, so often miss out on the wheeling and dealing on promotions taking place in the pub drinking..which is descrimination dont you think? Yes impressing your boss is part of corporate game but in tower Hamlets its more like is this person ‘white enough’?

Local knowledge and experience is essential for service delivery and improvement in service provision and delivery, and unless theres a shift in the cultural thinking in Tower Hamlets management, this farce will continue.

  36. on November 28, 2010 at 1:12 pm Fighting4EdMiliband

Ash must be Bengali and close to the ‘encircled councillors’. Who could it be?!

  37. on November 28, 2010 at 2:41 pm Ash

Keep on guessing, let me give you hint someone was closed to Pack but not anymore……but the point is what Labour Group or MP could do to those who broke the Labour whip with a statement, this was either signed or on air so no further excuse required, everyone knows Abbas, Pack, Saunders and them shafted by the Labour Leadership and Ken not to make any further mess in Tower Hamlets Labour politics, rumour is also that MP was also told off by Ed and Harriet for giving wrong information abut members selected candidate, this is why Leader or the She (Labour Whip – according to Fighting4EdMiliband )has no guards to withdraw the whip.

  38. on November 28, 2010 at 4:26 pm Fighting4EdMiliband

can we close this now plz!

  40. on November 30, 2010 at 12:45 am streetscholar

J Bond, I am not trying to patronise nor undermine the Bengali workforce. Nobody is asking for identity and values to be altered, but to understand that sometimes we have to be introspective instead of being so accusatory. Then ask ourselves if we are unwilling to change then we should not expect others to change. In my experience building relationships and being able to build those networks are often pre requisite requirements in senior posts. At a strategic level you will be bargaining, lobbying and influencing others and demonstrating your interpersonal skills. At an operational level you don’t have opportunities to demonstrate these skills. So if you’re the mute who sits in the corner, doesn’t lunch with colleagues, parttake in the social aspects you will not have the opportunity to demonstrate those afforementioned skills. So you’re destined for the bottom rung of the ladder. Then it’s a decision of the conscience u have to make.

Its not just the religious aspects but cultural understanding I don’t think many bengalis posses. Sensitivity works both ways my friend but I think we think it should be only us who should be catered for. The number of times I’ve seen councillors and staff conducting business in Bengali in the presence of non-Bengali speaking colleagues is countless. They obviously do not know how rude it is, and doesn’t demonstrate great professionalism. I know these are small matters but trust me they do matter and work a long way…
