Meet Bara G: The man who seriously wanted to be mayor…

June 12, 2015 by trialbyjeory

Motiur RahmanThis is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in Tower Hamlets politics.

This character, Motiur (Nanu) Rahman, issued this video on Wednesday and was standing for mayor last night. He came last with 292 votes. Had this speech been better publicised before the election he’d probably have sailed it.

I’m certain it’s serious although part of me also thinks it’s a new Sacha Baron Cohen character: I’d call him Bara G.

You’ll understand why after watching it. I’ll try and embed it here, but WordPress is a bit clunky embedding Facebook videos so if you can’t see it then do hit this link: it’s worth it.

When he says bara he means borough.

The comments underneath the posting on Abjol Miah’s Facebook page are also worth reading: they’re brilliant.

If you live out of the borough, do you wonder why?

    Neither did I 😦

Did he show for any of the hustings?
If he had done his press conference earlier, I would have voted for him… or maybe not…

Love the comments on the Facebook Page! 😀

I’d be laughing too if I could be convinced that his lost deposit properly covered the costs of his involvement in the election.

I’ve long been of the opinion that the deposit to run as a candidate needs to be raised quite significantly to cover all the costs of having the frivolous “me, me, me” candidates standing in elections.

Failing that a requirement to pass a test in the English language will suffice. I’d have one question – namely “How I will achieve a minimum of 5% of the vote without making up fairy stories or telling lies”.

It seems the Electoral Commission would like to scrap deposits http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-30790012

The bigger parties want to keep them as they think they deter the “non-serious candidate”

The smaller parties and independent candidates want the deposit scrapped so more of them get involved!!!

Ted – somebody needs to send this video to the Electoral Commission with a serious question attached i.e. Who exactly is going to pay for costs associated with the the proliferation of “me, me, me” candidates if the deposits are scrapped

    Unrelated, like your new banner!

I got his leaflet, handed to me outside Mile End station yesterday 🙂

“If I am elected, I will be utilizing my power to help not any housing cut”
“If I am elected, I will allocate more budgets for the care of the elderly and disable people.”
“If I am elected, if in a house there are more than three adults, two parking permits will be issued.”

The borough might have been a very different place under his rule.

Was Ahad Miah his campaign manager?

These prats muster up £500 for the deposit and £500 for the pages in the booklet. Where do they find £1000 from? And when they do, why can’t they just put it in my bank account rather than peeing it up the wall like this?

I suspect the words tower hamlets mayor appears on their business literature at some point.

Is he really a language school boss?

      • on June 13, 2015 at 12:50 am You couldn't make it up!

Might there be a case for referral to Trading Standards?

Don’t you remember that World in Action (or similar) programme which uncovered what a big rip-off many of the so-called language schools were?

        Which language? Can’t possibly English.

You have to admire his confidence. His mum must love him very much and have always told him he was very very special.
It’s jaw dropping but somehow it feels wrong to laugh at him, such is the innocence of his unwitting parody of local politics. When you think about it this is exactly what Rabina was doing, just turned up quite a few notches: the vanity, the delusional belief in one’s superior qualities, the ludicrous promises impossible to deliver, the self entitlement and belief that public funds are there purely to enable the elected representative to express their superior qualities of magnanimity, selflessness, generosity and compassion.
But where Rabina came across as insincere, this guy’s level of self delusion borders on social impediment.

Yes I agree, he was never likely to get more than a few hundred votes for all the obvious reasons. Ms Khan’s danger was that she came across as half credible to those who didn’t actually scrutinise her too closely or think about her aptitude and competence for the job in question. She was all gloss and no substance, although some would question the former too. However, most of all her supreme arrogance, confidence and delusion somehow convinced thousands to tribally follow her with a vote. Her manipulation and scheming is in stark contrast to this poor chap’s innocence and political parody.

When I saw his name at the start of the election period I thought I hope he get lots of votes from folk thinking he is “the Rahman”. It looks like at least 291 made that mistake.

He would have given us a new reformed borough at no cost. Brilliant.

Maybe he saw the last Mayor and thought ‘well if he can get elected then anyone can’!

  12. on June 13, 2015 at 2:10 pm The Facts

This was the fool who handed out a leaflet on commercial road promising to “freeze” council tax for “full-time university students”. Unfortunately they are exempt from the tax my law, so there is nothing this idiot could freeze. Nevermind his other promises, this man this the king of bullshit politics. I’m surpised he hasn’t joined the tower hamlets Tory party yet.

  13. on June 13, 2015 at 2:11 pm The Facts

Oh and I forgot, his leaflet also said he would monitor the borough’s affairs and work “24 hours” a day. Does he suffer of a superman delusion?

My cat has more twitter followers than this geezer. He hardly set the campaign on fire though. More seriously, there does need to be some basic standards in literacy if you are allowed to stand for election. I have always generally been opposed to a deposit payable by election candidates, now I’m not so sure!

For your enjoyment here’s his twitter link (10 tweets and 5 followers) interestingly he follows the The Electoral Commission. I wonder if they are following him (other than on twitter!)
