My response to John Biggs’ latest housing claims

February 19, 2014 by trialbyjeory

I don’t quite get what your alternative was: to cancel the 4,000 homes?

—(By way of explanation, the above was my attempt to leave a comment on Mayor Lutfur Rahman’s blog but of course he doesn’t like engaging in public discussion so the comments function has been disabled. I seem therefore to have “reblogged” his post onto my blog, so please leave your comments for him below.)

Mayor Lutfur Rahman

John Biggs is desperate to get elected. So desperate that he’ll knock down any of the borough’s achievements despite the national and international recognition we’ve gained.

In the last 3 years Tower Hamlets has received £50m in “New Homes Bonus” cash from the government- more than any other local authority- and topped every league table for house building. But Biggs is insulting the intelligence of local people by claiming we’ve only built 15 homes – not 4000.

That’s a big difference so how does he come to this figure? Simple, he moves the goalposts and applies a different definition of “housebuilding” to Tower Hamlets than that used by the whole of the rest of the country. He doesn’t attack Newham, who boast about building 2,000 new homes by the same measure we use, or even Mayor Boris Johnson who has aspirations to build 150,000 affordable homes across London.

But I…

Homes have been built but the “international recognition” is because of the hard work and innovative approach from some of the borough’s housing associations for which Lutfur and his team can claim NO credit as they have completely failed to engage with them.

On another note…….youth provision. The budget was taken in house when Lutfur got in and now he and his team have achieved nothing whilst youth crime and anti social behaviour has gone up.

Also…….i am glad that John Biggs is ‘desparate’ to be Mayor. I’d be worried if he wasn’t.

aren’t you just complaining because the youth service was taken off Steve Stride?

disgrace that it was ever privatised in the first place

The ‘hard work and innovative approach from some of the borough’s housing associations’ is creating tomorrow’s slums today and Labour is centrally responsible for this.

      Can you explain this Stewart?

How much is Lutfur paying you Stewart?

I have read and re-read the claims by Rahman and I am sure that I have got this right. He really is claiming that his administration has built 4000 in three years. I am correct aren’t I? This is so obviously a lie that it puts totally in the shade everything else he has claimed to have achieved and most of that was a bare faced porky.

How can any of the trendy vicars and far lefties like Jon Lansman still be associated with this obvious clown and charlatan? May be Stewart Rayment can answer that question.

At last, a whiff of local politics appears amid the bright sunlight.

I agree. The Mayor needs to be knocked-off his perch.

upset the normally sensible Mullah from Brick Lane.

Just how many of the claimed 4,000 dwellings are so attractive both inside and outside that any of you would want to buy one to live in as your own home? Labour are responsible for some dreadful examples of social housing whilst their leaders live in substantially better, and much superior, accommodation.

If you, whoever you are, want to live in nice surroundings, why can’t the poor who currently live in unattractive cramped flats ?

That’s what this local election should really be about. Biggs is the best available alternative to the Mayor but not actually the best TH should be offering to the public.

    Did a LBTH FOI

    (1) Please provide for the current and previous 3 years annual totals of completed new-build social housing separating flats from houses.

    (2) How many of those dwellings did the local authority itself build and then manage the lettings ?

    https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/lbth_social_dwelling_completions

Oh silly me. I forgot to ask how many the mayor built himself or actually supervised the building of. Anyone got any idea ?

CC. The allegation is that Labour either deliberately or by neglect are building the slums of the future which is of course ridiculous.

    • on February 20, 2014 at 2:45 pm Curious Cat

      => Mr Mullah,

When Labour are in control of the different councils, and thus control both the planning committee and various local planning policies, they have usually messed-up badly. Don’t know if they, like other party’s councillors, are getting back handers for approving the building of shabby dwellings.often too small to be appealing to their inhabitants and sometimes badly laid-out.

What I do know is my own slogan for at least the last 5 years has been

“Labour today building the slums of tomorrow.”

Today’s Labour Party is not very different from today’s Tory Party. Both have nasty back-stabbing fanatics, wealthy leaders and top people who have never ever done a real job in their entire lives.

Do you want LBTH to improve ? Well don’t depend on your Labour Party to work wonders. The Mayor offers hope to those who so desperately want improvements. What has Labour ever truly given the voters of TH apart from Clause 4, lots of waffle, banking crisis and their very own Son of Labour, Mr Mayor ?

I haven’t seen any wonderful inspiring promises from TH Labour yet polling day is just 3 months away …. Does Labour genuinely care about anything except about itself and party members own personal advantage ?

      Mr Mullah,

What are the remaining options once deliberate and neglect are considered ? Seems to me their are none.

Labour are/have accidentally built the slums of the future – that sounds like neglect of responsibility.

    Where is you evidence?

  8. on February 27, 2014 at 1:40 pm WHS

These homes have been built by the Government, with Government cash, not by Lutfur Rahman. The reason the Government have put more money into homes in this borough than any other is because the need is greatest. And yet, if you talk to Lutfur Rahman, this Government hates the poor and hates Tower Hamlets. What a topsy turvy argument.
